Understanding the Difference So You Can Make the Right Choice
These two terms sound almost identical, but they refer to very different types of care. Confusing them is one of the most common mistakes families make when looking for help. Understanding the distinction will save you time, money, and frustration.
This is what Domira provides. Non-medical support that helps individuals live safely and independently at home.
Skilled medical care provided in the home by licensed nurses and therapists. This is a different service from what Domira offers.
Who provides it: Home care is provided by trained caregivers and personal care aides. Home health is provided by registered nurses, physical therapists, and other licensed medical professionals.
What it covers: Home care covers the daily tasks of living: bathing, eating, moving around the house, companionship. Home health covers medical needs: wound care, injections, therapy, monitoring vital signs.
How it's paid for: Home health is typically covered by Medicare when ordered by a physician. Home care is usually paid out of pocket or through long-term care insurance. Medicare generally does not cover non-medical home care.
How long it lasts: Home health visits are usually episodic, a nurse comes for an hour a few times a week until the medical issue is resolved. Home care can be ongoing for as long as it's needed, from a few hours a week to 24/7 care.
Authorization: Home health requires a doctor's order. Home care does not. You can contact Domira directly without a referral or prescription.
Yes, and many families do. A common scenario: a home health nurse visits three times a week to manage a wound or monitor recovery after surgery. A home care aide from Domira is there daily to help with bathing, meals, housekeeping, and companionship. The two services complement each other. The medical provider handles clinical needs. The home care provider handles everything else.
We are experienced in coordinating with home health agencies, hospice providers, and medical teams. If you already have a home health provider in place, we are happy to work alongside them.
