Home Care vs Home Health Care

Understanding the Difference So You Can Make the Right Choice

These two terms sound almost identical, but they refer to very different types of care. Confusing them is one of the most common mistakes families make when looking for help. Understanding the distinction will save you time, money, and frustration.

Home Care (Non-Medical)

This is what Domira provides. Non-medical support that helps individuals live safely and independently at home.

  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting
  • Companion care and supervision
  • Meal preparation and nutrition
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Transportation and errands
  • Medication reminders (not administration)
  • Alzheimer's and dementia support
  • No doctor's order required
  • Paid privately or through long-term care insurance
  • Can be ongoing for months or years

Home Health Care (Medical)

Skilled medical care provided in the home by licensed nurses and therapists. This is a different service from what Domira offers.

  • Skilled nursing: wound care, IV therapy, injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Medical monitoring and assessments
  • Requires a doctor's order
  • Typically covered by Medicare or insurance
  • Usually short-term or episodic
  • Visits are scheduled, not continuous

The Key Differences

Who provides it: Home care is provided by trained caregivers and personal care aides. Home health is provided by registered nurses, physical therapists, and other licensed medical professionals.

What it covers: Home care covers the daily tasks of living: bathing, eating, moving around the house, companionship. Home health covers medical needs: wound care, injections, therapy, monitoring vital signs.

How it's paid for: Home health is typically covered by Medicare when ordered by a physician. Home care is usually paid out of pocket or through long-term care insurance. Medicare generally does not cover non-medical home care.

How long it lasts: Home health visits are usually episodic, a nurse comes for an hour a few times a week until the medical issue is resolved. Home care can be ongoing for as long as it's needed, from a few hours a week to 24/7 care.

Authorization: Home health requires a doctor's order. Home care does not. You can contact Domira directly without a referral or prescription.

Can You Use Both at the Same Time?

Yes, and many families do. A common scenario: a home health nurse visits three times a week to manage a wound or monitor recovery after surgery. A home care aide from Domira is there daily to help with bathing, meals, housekeeping, and companionship. The two services complement each other. The medical provider handles clinical needs. The home care provider handles everything else.

We are experienced in coordinating with home health agencies, hospice providers, and medical teams. If you already have a home health provider in place, we are happy to work alongside them.

How to Know Which You Need

Ask yourself these questions:

Does your loved one need help with daily tasks like bathing, eating, or getting around the house? That's home care. Contact us directly.

Does your loved one need medical treatment at home, such as wound care, injections, or physical therapy? That's home health. Talk to their doctor about getting a referral.

Does your loved one need both? That's common. Start with whichever is more urgent and we'll help you coordinate the rest.

Domira Home Care provides non-medical personal care services.

We help individuals live safely and independently at home through daily living support. We do not provide clinical or medical care, but we work alongside providers who do.

Not sure what your family needs? We're happy to talk through it. No pressure, no obligation.
